Dear Friends,
first of all Happy New Year with the hope that this is going to be a great year for you and your beloved ones.
I took some time off during the holidays to think and reschedule my work, giving more importance to new streams of income and paths that I want to follow.
As you well know, I am a surface pattern designer (“what is that?” I hear you saying… keep reading and trust me!), licensing my work to brands all over the world for them to apply on their products, wallpapers, fabrics, stationery.
This is my dream since I was a child and I am now lucky enough to be able to call my dream my work!
But with the advent of AI (no, not Adobe Illustrator, the other one…), the market got filled with artificial illustrated designs, that nothing have to do with the beautiful work that artists and designers do.
Luckily, something is drifting away from this tendency in the design world, and it’s exciting!
After years of plain solids and minimalism, hand drawn patterns are having a moment and brands are recognising it choosing human drawn designs over AI generated ones (yeah!!!)
Bold prints, hand-drawn motifs, and rich textures are showing up everywhere: fabric, wallpaper, packaging, and even entire interiors.
Vogue is calling it pattern drenching. Colorful accessories are up on Etsy by 3000%.
By 2030, the wallpaper market is expected to grow by 28%, digital textile printing is projected to grow by 100% and the home textiles market is projected to grow by 50%.
Brands are scrambling to find fresh, story-driven patterns and I am lucky enough to have designed for some of these brands already (do you remember my Sarah Flint NY S/S25 scarf???) and being working on several new licensing deals just as I am writing.
None of this would have been possible without my teacher Bonnie Christine’s guidance. Bonnie is a self taught artist who turned business into an artform. She is an incredibly talented and generous Surface Pattern Design teacher and she teaches in such a way that you can’t help but feel calm, capable, and more confident after her lessons.
